Attorneys Against Hunger

This annual campaign raises money for the following local hunger service agencies: the Downtown Ministerium Walk-in Ministry (First Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, Smithfield United Church, St. Mary of Mercy, and Trinity Cathedral), East End Cooperative Ministry, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Intersection, Inc., Jubilee Kitchen, Just Harvest, Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force, Rainbow Kitchen, Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, and Urban League Hunger Services.

Since 1993, Attorneys Against Hunger has raised over $700,000 to help end hunger in Allegheny County. Through LexisNexis’ corporate underwriting, every dollar donated to Attorneys Against Hunger goes
directly to feed hungry children and families in our community.

This year, Attorneys Against Hunger raised an all-time high of nearly $98,000. Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC, the Rita M. McGinley Foundation, and the McGinley family members of the ACBA again provided the campaign with a $15,000 challenge grant in support of Attorneys Against Hunger. The generous donations of members and sections of the ACBA, local law firms and companies, and the annual Skate-a-Thon sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division were instrumental in making this a record-breaking year for Attorneys Against Hunger.

The next campaign will run from November 2008–February 2009.

In Allegheny County:

  • One out of every six children under the age of 18 is hungry or at-risk of hunger.
  • 13 percent of residents are living in poverty compared to the national average of 12.3 percent.
  • 70 percent of households using local food banks have incomes at or below the poverty level, which is $20,000 for a family of four.

The members of the Allegheny County Bar Association have the ability and responsibility to help ensure that all children in Allegheny County receive a balanced meal. For every $25 gift to Attorneys Against Hunger, $125 worth of food and services is delivered to hungry children and families in Allegheny County.
